It is the week of Diwali. The house is half-cleaned, the rangoli colours are still in the shopping bag, and you have just realised that nobody ordered the sweets.
Take a breath. Every sweet maker in Melbourne has a queue of people in exactly the same position, and most of them go home with something good. You just need to be a little flexible and a little early.
Here is how to rescue Diwali sweets at short notice.
Step 1: call before you drive
The single most useful thing you can do is phone ahead. A two-minute call tells you what is ready, what is close to selling out and when to come. Call us on 1300 790 350, or send a pre-order through our Diwali page with the date you need it and we will tell you what we can do.
Custom boxes and large orders need more notice, so the closer you get to Diwali, the more you will be choosing from what is already made. That is fine. In Diwali week, sweet kitchens make fresh stock every day.
Step 2: know what is usually still available
Loose sweets from the counter. Ladoo, kaju katli, peda and barfi are made in large quantities through Diwali week, and these are the most reliable last-minute buys.
Ready-made gift boxes, while they last. Our Diwali gift boxes are available through the season, but popular boxes can sell out in the final days, so ask what is left.
Dry fruit boxes. Because they keep longer, nut boxes are often still on the shelf when the mithai boxes have gone. The Dry Fruit Window Box is a good fallback for almost anyone.
Amba sweets at your local grocer. Our sweets are stocked at Indian grocery stores across Melbourne. If you cannot get to us, find a store near you.
Step 3: be ready to swap
If your first choice has gone, there is almost always a close alternative.
| Sold out | Try instead |
|---|---|
| Kaju katli | Kaju kesar katli, almond barfi or kaju pista roll |
| Motichoor ladoo | Navratan boondi ladoo or besan burfi |
| Kesar peda | Mathura peda or white peda |
| Kalakand | Milk cake or roasted kalakand |
| A mithai gift box | A dry fruit box, or build your own box from loose sweets |
Nobody receiving a box of fresh almond barfi will notice it was your second choice.
Step 4: build your own gift box
If the ready-made boxes have gone, put one together yourself. It often looks more personal than a bought box.
- Pick three or four sweets that differ in colour and texture: something pale like katli, something bright like ladoo, something dark like mathura peda.
- Keep the cut sweets flat. Lay katli and barfi in a single layer so the silver leaf does not smear.
- Keep syrup sweets separate. Gulab jamun and rasgulla go in their own sealed container, never in a box with dry sweets.
- Add a little extra. A few cashews or almonds, a small diya, or a handwritten card.
- Use a good box. Any sturdy box with a lid and a ribbon looks festive with sweets inside.
A day-by-day plan for Diwali week 2026
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Sunday 1 to Tuesday 3 November | Still comfortable. Call to order ready-made gift boxes and larger quantities. |
| Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 November | Call first, then collect early in the day. Expect some sell-outs. |
| Friday 6 November, Dhanteras | The busiest day of the year. Go first thing, and be ready to swap. |
| Saturday 7 November | Most popular sweets are moving fast. Loose counter sweets are your best bet. |
| Sunday 8 November, Diwali | Small top-ups only. Get there early. |
| Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 November | Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Quieter, and a good time to restock for visits. |
Collecting in Diwali week
- Go early in the day. Queues build through the afternoon, especially on Dhanteras.
- Bring a cool bag for milk sweets like kalakand and rasmalai.
- Carry boxes flat and do not stack heavy boxes on top of soft sweets.
- Never leave sweets in the car. A Melbourne November afternoon can turn a car into an oven.
Last-minute ideas for the office
If you have just been asked to sort out sweets for a work celebration:
- A few Golden Ladoo Window Boxes, each holding 12 motichoor ladoo, are quick to collect and easy to share.
- Loose ladoo and kaju katli on a platter work just as well. Allow three or four pieces per person.
- Label the plate with what each sweet is and that it contains nuts and dairy.
Our Diwali catering guide covers quantities for larger groups.
For next year
If this year was a scramble, here is the calendar that avoids it:
- Six to eight weeks out: corporate and bulk orders.
- Three to four weeks out: custom boxes and large family orders.
- Ten to fourteen days out: standard gift boxes.
Our Diwali sweets guide and our guide to the best Diwali gift boxes in Melbourne cover the rest.
