Dry Fruit Gift Boxes for Diwali in Melbourne: Cashews, Almonds and Mithai Combinations

Dry fruit is as traditional a Diwali gift as mithai, and it keeps far longer. What makes a good dry fruit box, the boxes we make in Melbourne, and who each one suits.

Every family has one. The uncle who smiles politely at the mithai box and then reaches straight for the cashews.

A dry fruit box is for him, and for a lot of other people besides. Dry fruit has been a Diwali gift for as long as mithai has, and in some families it carries more weight: a box of cashews and almonds says abundance in a way that is hard to argue with.

It also solves practical problems. Nuts keep for weeks rather than days, they suit people who are cutting back on sugar, and they travel well. This guide covers what makes a good dry fruit box, the boxes we make in Melbourne, and how to choose between them.

Why dry fruit makes such a good Diwali gift

It keeps. Fresh mithai is at its best within days. A sealed box of nuts is still good long after Diwali, which matters when a household is given six boxes in one weekend.

It suits people who avoid sweets. Not everyone wants another kilo of barfi. Nuts are the gift for the person who is watching their sugar or simply prefers something savoury.

It travels. Nuts do not mind a warm car, a long drive or a day sitting on a desk, which makes them a safe choice for corporate gifts and for boxes that have to go between several houses.

It looks generous. A well-filled box of whole cashews and almonds reads as a premium gift, and a glass top shows off the contents without anyone having to open it.

What to look for in a dry fruit box

  • Whole nuts. Whole cashews and almonds, not broken pieces, are the mark of a good box.
  • Variety. A mix of plain and spiced, raw and roasted, keeps the box interesting.
  • Freshness. Nuts should be crisp, not soft or stale. A sealed or airtight box keeps them that way.
  • Presentation. A box people will keep and reuse adds value long after the nuts are gone.

Our dry fruit and nut gift boxes

Dry Fruit Window Box

The Dry Fruit Window Box holds four premium nuts under a glass top: spiced cashews, plain cashews, roasted almonds and natural almonds.

Best for: people who prefer nuts to sweets, clients, colleagues, gifts that need a long life.

This is our only nuts-only box, and the one to choose when you want no mithai at all. The four compartments give a good mix of flavours, and the window top makes it look smart on a desk or a side table.

Royal Black Dry Fruit & Mithai Box

The Royal Black Dry Fruit & Mithai Box holds cashews and almonds alongside kaju katli and barfi, in a black and gold glass-top box.

Best for: clients, colleagues, households where some people want nuts and others want sweets.

It is the box that keeps everyone happy, and the black and gold finish suits a business gift as well as a personal one.

Mithai & Nuts Gift Tray

The Mithai & Nuts Gift Tray combines a 16-piece mithai and chocolate selection with four kinds of nuts, in a pink or yellow box.

Best for: families with children, friends who are new to Indian sweets, mixed-age households.

The chocolate makes it the easiest box for children, while the nuts and mithai cover everyone else.

The luxury trunks

Three of our hampers include nuts as a centrepiece:

These are the gifts for parents, in-laws and your most important clients, where the box itself is part of the present.

Prefer mithai made with nuts?

If you would rather give sweets but want the richness of dry fruit, plenty of mithai is built on nuts. Kaju katli is made from cashews, almond barfi from almonds, and kaju pista roll combines cashew and pistachio. For something fuller of dried fruit, try rose dry fruit ladoo, kaju anjeer chakkar with figs, or kaju kalash stuffed with dry fruit.

Dry fruit panjiri is a different thing again: coarse, nutty and only lightly sweet, and it keeps for weeks.

Keeping a dry fruit box fresh

  • Store it airtight. Once the box is opened, move the nuts into airtight jars so they stay crisp.
  • Keep it cool and out of the sun. Heat makes nuts go stale and oily faster.
  • Check the date. Follow any best-before date on the pack.
  • In a mixed box, eat the mithai first. Nuts keep far longer than fresh sweets, so finish the sweets within a few days and enjoy the nuts after.

Our Indian sweets storage guide covers the mithai side in detail.

A word on nut allergies

This one is obvious but worth saying. Every box on this page contains nuts, and all of our sweets are made in a kitchen that handles nuts every day. If you are giving to someone with a nut allergy, a dry fruit box is the wrong gift, and it is worth letting colleagues know what is inside before a box is shared around an office.
