India is now one of the largest countries of birth for people living in Australia, and Indian-Australians make up a significant share of the workforce in tech, healthcare, finance, retail and logistics. For many Australian businesses, Diwali has quietly become one of the dates on the calendar where a gesture is expected, by staff and by clients.

Done well, a Diwali gift lands as genuine recognition. Done badly, it reads as a box ticked in a hurry. The difference is rarely the budget. It is usually timing, a bit of cultural awareness, and choosing something people actually want to eat.

This guide is for the person who has been asked to sort it out: HR, an office manager, an account lead, or a business owner doing it themselves.

Why sweets are the default Diwali gift

Exchanging mithai is one of the oldest Diwali customs. Families send boxes to relatives, neighbours and colleagues, and a box of sweets on someone’s desk in early November carries the same meaning in Melbourne as it does in Mumbai.

Sweets also solve several practical problems for a business. They suit almost every budget, they are shared easily at home, and nobody has to find a place on a shelf for them. Most importantly, receiving mithai at Diwali feels familiar and right to Indian colleagues in a way a generic hamper does not.

Who to gift

Most businesses end up with three groups, each needing a slightly different approach.

Employees. Usually the largest group and the one with the most practical constraints: numbers, dietary needs, remote staff, and fairness across teams. A consistent box for everyone, with a nut-free or alternative option on request, is the simplest approach.

Clients. Fewer people, higher expectations. Presentation matters more, and a premium selection with a handwritten card does more work than a larger box.

Partners and suppliers. Often forgotten, and a good way to stand out. A modest box to the teams you work with every day is noticed precisely because it is unexpected.

What to put in a corporate box

Corporate gifts face conditions that a box carried to a relative’s house does not. They sit on desks, travel home on trains, and get opened days after delivery. That shapes what belongs in them.

Choose shelf-stable sweets. Katli, barfi and peda keep for around a week at room temperature, which is exactly the window a corporate gift needs. Kaju katli, kaju kesar katli, almond barfi, kesar peda and mathura peda are all reliable choices.

Leave out syrup and chhena sweets. Rasgulla, rasmalai and gulab jamun are wonderful at a party but need refrigeration and do not survive a day on a desk. Save them for the office celebration itself.

Mix three or four varieties. A box of one sweet looks like a bulk order. Three or four varieties with different colours and textures looks like a gift. Motichoor ladoo adds colour, kaju katli adds the premium touch, and peda or milk cake adds something softer.

Size it for a household. People take Diwali sweets home to share. A box that feeds a family of four lands better than an individual portion.

Our comparison of kaju katli, almond barfi and kesar peda goes into which sweet suits which recipient, and our Diwali gift boxes guide covers box combinations in detail.

Dietary needs and inclusion

A workplace gift has to work for everyone on the list, which needs a bit more thought than a family gift.

Nut allergies. Kaju katli and almond barfi are made from nuts, and most Indian sweet kitchens handle nuts every day. Offer a nut-free alternative such as a fruit or non-food gift for anyone with an allergy, and do not describe any mithai as nut-free unless the supplier confirms it in writing.

Vegan staff. Most traditional mithai is built on milk, ghee and khoya, so it is not vegan. Plan an alternative.

Jain and other religious diets. Plain milk and nut sweets are often acceptable, but ingredients vary between makers. Check before assuming.

Colleagues who do not celebrate Diwali. Most Australian workplaces frame the gift as a shared celebration rather than a religious observance, and that works well. A simple card along the lines of “Wishing you light, joy and a sweet Diwali” is warm without presuming anything.

The practical habit that saves the most trouble: collect dietary needs when you collect delivery addresses, not after the order is placed.

The tax side, briefly

The Australian Taxation Office generally treats food gifts such as hampers as non-entertainment gifts, which affects how they are treated for fringe benefits tax and deductions.

For employees, gifts worth less than $300 per person per occasion can fall under the minor benefits exemption from FBT. For clients, non-entertainment gifts made in the course of business are generally deductible.

This is general information, not tax advice. The rules depend on your circumstances, so confirm the treatment with your accountant before you order.

When to order and deliver

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Working backwards:

StepTiming
Confirm budget, numbers and recipient listEarly October
Collect dietary needs and delivery addressesEarly October
Place the order and confirm the quote3 to 4 weeks ahead, by mid-October
Deliver to the officeWednesday 4 to Friday 6 November
Deliver to remote staff and clientsMonday 2 to Thursday 5 November

The days just before Diwali are the busiest of the year for every Indian sweet maker in Australia. With Diwali on a Sunday this year, most workplace deliveries will fall on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 November, the same days as Dhanteras, which is also a peak buying day for households. If you want a particular selection, order early.

For staff who mostly work from home, deliver earlier in the week so boxes are not left on a doorstep over a warm weekend.

Presentation and the card

Two small things make a corporate gift feel considered.

A personal card. A short handwritten note from a manager or account lead turns a box into a message. Even a printed card with the recipient’s name beats no card at all.

Delivery in person where possible. For clients you see regularly, dropping the box off yourself in Diwali week does more for the relationship than any courier.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Diwali gift for employees in Australia? A box of fresh Indian sweets is the traditional Diwali gift and works well for most workplaces. Choose shelf-stable varieties such as kaju katli, barfi and peda, mix three or four types, and offer an alternative for anyone with a nut allergy or vegan diet.

When should businesses order Diwali gifts? Three to four weeks before Diwali. For Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026, that means placing orders by mid-October and scheduling delivery between Monday 2 and Friday 6 November.

Are Diwali gifts to employees subject to FBT? The ATO generally treats food gifts such as hampers as non-entertainment gifts, and gifts worth under $300 per employee per occasion can fall under the minor benefits exemption. Rules depend on your circumstances, so confirm with your accountant.

Which Indian sweets last longest in a gift box? Kaju katli, almond barfi and peda keep for around five to seven days at room temperature, which makes them the best choices for corporate gifts. Syrup and chhena sweets such as rasgulla and rasmalai need refrigeration and are better served fresh.

Is it appropriate to give Diwali gifts to colleagues who do not celebrate it? Yes, in most Australian workplaces. Framing the gift as a shared celebration works well, with a warm, simple message such as wishing the recipient light, joy and a sweet Diwali.

Can I order Diwali sweets in bulk for my company in Melbourne? Yes. Amba Foods supplies bulk mithai for corporate gifting and office celebrations. Pre-order on our Diwali page with your quantity and delivery date, and we will send a quote, usually within one business day, with collection or delivery across Melbourne.
